Wig Size Guide: How to Measure Your Head and Choose the Right Size (Easily)

One of the most common questions among women ordering a wig for the first time is:
How do I know which size to choose?

If you already wear wigs, you can simply choose the size of the wig you wear (assuming it's comfortable for you and you don't feel the need to change its size).

If you don't know your size or feel the need to reconfirm your size, this guide is for you.

The good news is that choosing a wig size is actually much simpler than it seems.
Unlike clothing, where there are dozens of different circumferences and body measurements, with wigs, most of the fitting is based on only one main measurement – head circumference.

Additionally, most high-quality wigs include internal adjustment mechanisms such as tightening straps and cap flexibility, so even if the measurement isn't perfectly precise, a comfortable and easy adjustment can be made.

In other words -
With just a few minutes of measuring, you can confidently choose a size and order a wig online.

In this guide, we will explain:

-  How to measure your head correctly

-  Which measurements are truly important

 - How to use our size chart

-  What to do in special situations

Everything You Need Before You Start Measuring

Before measuring your head, it's important to prepare a few small items that will help make the measurement accurate.

What you need for measuring

-  A soft measuring tape (like a sewing tape measure). It's important that it's not stretchy.

 - A mirror or another person to help ensure the tape is positioned correctly.

 - A phone/paper to write down the results.

 - Any item you typically use to gather your hair: hair tie, clips, wig cap, etc.

No measuring tape? You can use a string and then measure it with a ruler.

How to prepare your hair for measuring

To measure correctly, it's important to measure in a state similar to how the wig will actually sit:

-
Gather your hair into a low ponytail / bun / braid

 - Press your hair as close to your head as possible

-
If your hair is very thick – use a wig cap

The goal: to prevent your hair from adding volume that would make the measurement larger than reality (or different from what you do daily under a wig).

The Most Important Measurement - Head Circumference

The main measurement by which the wig size is determined is head circumference.

In most cases, this measurement alone is sufficient to choose the appropriate size.

Additional measurements are mainly used to check for a more precise fit of the wig structure to the head or to identify the need for a special size, but in most situations, they will not change the size chosen based on the circumference.

1. How to measure head circumference

1.       Place the measuring tape at the beginning of your hairline at the center of your forehead.

2.       Pass the tape over your ear along your hairline (actually below your earlobe).

3.       Continue with the tape around the back of your head, through your nape.

4.       Continue through the other side of your head until you return to the starting point on your forehead.

5.       When the tape reaches the starting point on your forehead again, hold the connection point of the tape with your fingernail to read the number.

The tape should be snug against the head but not tight.

Tip: When measuring, pay attention to whether the measuring tape is marked in centimeters or inches. It's important to use the same unit of measurement that appears in our size chart (and if necessary, you can use a conversion calculator).

Additional Measurements

Besides head circumference, there are a few other measurements that can help with a more precise wig fit.

2. From Forehead to Nape

Measure from the center of the hairline on your forehead, over the top of your head, to your nape.

3. Ear to Ear Across Forehead

Measure from the edge of one ear, passing the measuring tape along the hairline on the forehead, and continuing to the edge of the other ear.

4. Ear to Ear Over Top of Head

Measure from the edge of one ear, over the top of the head, to the edge of the other ear.

Write down the result you got for each measurement.

How to Interpret the Results

Once you have finished measuring, compare your measurements to the size chart on the page of the wig you wish to purchase - the cap structure may vary between models, and therefore the size chart on the page will also change accordingly.

Instructions for finding your size according to the chart:

Step A - Check the Circumference

Example 1: Circumference falls exactly within a size range

Example: Circumference 55 → falls within the M range, so this is your size.

Example 2: Circumference is "between sizes"

Example: Circumference 56.7 → between M and L.
In such a situation, it is generally recommended to choose the larger size, because the internal adjustment straps allow for a slight reduction of the cap.
A wig that is too small may cause pressure or not sit naturally.

At this stage, you already have your size. Simple, right?

Step B: Check if Special Adjustment is Needed

Situation 1: Small deviation (up to one size above/below)

Example: Circumference M, forehead-to-nape L, ear-to-ear across forehead S.
In this case, you would still choose M.

Situation 2: Large and significant deviation

Example: Circumference S, and one or more measurements come out L/XL (or vice versa).
Here you might consider a custom-fit cap, especially if maximizing comfort is important to you (or if you are sensitive to pressure/instability).
And still - in most cases, the circumference size can still be chosen.

In Summary

Choosing a wig size does not have to be complicated.

In most cases:

-
 Measure head circumference

-
 Compare to the size chart

-
 Choose the appropriate size

The additional measurements are there to achieve a more precise fit, but they are not critical in most cases.
